SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Angelo State's Chelsea Nelson limited Midwestern State to two hits to carry the 19th-ranked Rambelles to a 5-2 win Friday afternoon in the St. Mary's NCAA Division II Classic at the SAISD Spring Sports Complex.
The loss left the Mustangs with an opening day split as MSU claimed a 6-2 victory over Tarleton State earlier in the day.
Angelo State rocked Midwestern starter
Katie Petersen with five doubles while opening up a 4-0 lead in the top of the third after April Haywood's two-run capped a three-run inning.
The Mustangs took advantage of an error by ASU second baseman Alix Dean in the bottom of the inning to cut the Rambelle lead in half.
McKenzie Sickler worked for an eight-pitch walk to lead off the inning before
Elena Bennett legged out an infield single to give the Mustangs two runners on with one out.
Dean was unable to handle
Natalie Rodriguez' grounder to second allowing Sickler and Bennett to rush plate ward to pull the Mustangs to within 4-2.
That's as close as Nelson would allow as she would allow a leadoff single to
Mallory Mooney in the fourth inning, then sent down the next 12 in order to close out the game to improve to 1-0 on the season.
Nelson fanned seven and allowed a walk in two hits in the complete game victory.
Petersen allowed five runs - four earned - on 10 hits while striking out five and walking two in her season debut.
Earlier in the day, junior
Brittney Tanner went the distance allowing two runs on five hits to help Midwestern to a 6-2 win over Tarleton State.
The Mustangs continue play in the class with games against Eastern New Mexico at 1 p.m. and Texas A&M-Kingsville at 5. They close the tournament with a 10 a.m. showdown with tournament host St. Mary's on Sunday.
