STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Tarleton State jumped on Midwestern State from the start and coasted to a 70-47 Lone Star Conference South Division win Wednesday night at Wisdom Gym.
The Mustangs, who dropped their sixth-straight to fall to 6-13 on the season and 0-6 in division play, play host to the TexAnns on the return game of Rivalry Week Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Tarleton State (17-4, 4-2) rolled out to a 12-3 lead when Morgan Stehling hit a pair of free throws with 16:18 to play in the first half and slowly constructed a 42-20 lead at the half.
The Mustangs worked to build a pair of runs in the second half as
Aqueelah Watkins culminated a quick 8-0 run with a layup and a jumper in the lane to pull the Mustangs within 46-31 with 14:52 remaining in the second half.
After the TexAnns responded with a 7-0 run of their own, Watkins fueled another 10-0 run with six points as MSU trailed 53-41 after she hit a layup with with 7:47 to play.
Tarleton would outscore the Mustangs 27-6 the rest of the way.
Watkins paced MSU with 14 points and nine rebounds off of the bench, while junior forward
Nolisha Markham added 11 points - all from the free-throw line - also in a reserve role.
Sophomore guard Shelby Adamson led the TexAnns with 14 points, while Brittnie Haley and Shedera Bowman added 10 points each.
