Mustangs flex muscles in 10-1 run-rule of Missouri Southern

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State blitzed Missouri Southern with three home runs en route to a 10-1 in the finale of the Holiday Inn at the Falls/MSU Invitational Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs completed the weekend with a perfect 5-0 mark and outscored the opposition 22-3 to claim the tournament championship.

Sophomore third baseman Mallory Mooney blasted a two-run homer in the first inning before MSU put the game away with a seven-run second inning which was highlighted by freshman shortstop Natalie Rodriguez' first collegiate grand slam while junior outfielder Amanda Potysman capped the inning with a two-run homer over the center field fence.

The run support was more than enough for junior Brittney Tanner who improved to 3-0 on the season, while allowing one unearned run on two hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in the 5-inning run rule.

Eight different players collected a hit for the Mustangs, who had their bid for a third shutout of the invitational dashed in the fourth inning.

Missouri Southern took advantage of a pair of MSU errors to extend the inning for Krista Bomak whose infield single drove in Jessica Johnston for the Lions' lone run of the contest.

Tanner and Mooney joined Courtney Bingham on the all-tournament team, while senior pitcher Katie Petersen gained MVP honors.

Petersen pitched a perfect game against Western New Mexico on Friday before weaving a three-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over West Texas A&M on Saturday.

Petersen, Tanner and junior Kristina Gutierrez combined for a team ERA of 0.21 for the weekend as Midwestern limited the opposition to one earned run on nine hits to go with 51 strikeouts and seven walks in 33 combined innings over the weekend.

Midwestern State travels to Wells Field to take on Abilene Christian Thursday afternoon. The doubleheader was originally slated for Tuesday, but was postponed due to forecasted snow and cold weather.
