ABILENE, Texas - Mallory Mooney clubbed her second home run to extend her hitting streak to five games as Midwestern State blasted Abilene Christian 14-2 in Game 2 Thursday night to earn a twin bill split.
Mooney highlighted a seven-run third inning with a three-run blast to center field and completed the afternoon a combined 4-for-6 to improve her team-best batting average to .462.
Abilene Christian got the best of the Mustangs 7-2 in the opener as MSU went to 9-3 on the season, while the Wildcats are now 6-7.
Midwestern jumped on ACU starter Jacque Gregoire with five runs in the top of the first and continued the onslaught in the second inning as the junior, who went 22-6 for the Wildcats last season, exited after yielding seven runs - six earned - on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings.
The Mustangs loaded the bases in the top of the first as freshman
Natalie Rodriguez stroked a double to the left-field gap to lead off the game while
Elena Bennett reached on a single and
Courtney Bingham drew a walk to load the bases.
Mooney followed with an RBI-single to center field before
Lauren Craig drilled a two-run double to center field to push the lead to 3-0.
Craig would come around to score on
Megan Chartier's bases loaded walk and
Alyson Reynolds came plate ward when
McKenzie Sickler reached on a fielder's choice to push the lead to 5-0.
The Mustangs would add a pair of runs in the second and erupted for seven runs in the third fueled by long balls from Mooney (3-run shot) and Sickler (2-run shot) to expand the lead to 14-1.
Senior pitcher
Katie Petersen scattered nine hits and allowed two runs while improving to 4-2 on the season. The Plano native, who added five strikeouts, now has 669 for her career and needs 10 more to overtake Brittany Willson (678 from 2004-06) to become MSU's all-time strikeout leader.
Abilene Christian jumped on MSU starter
Brittney Tanner for three runs in the first inning of Game 1 as the Wildcats opened with a double, triple and a single followed by a another double to take early command of the game.
That was more than enough for starter Shelby Hall, who allowed two runs on eight hits in the complete game victory to improve to 2-3.
Midwestern broke the shutout bid in the seventh inning when Reynolds drove in Chartier with a double to the right-field gap and would come around to score on Rodriguez RBI-single to center field.
ACU would add a single run in the second, two more in the in third and another fourth.
Tanner was saddled with the loss to fall to 3-1 after allowing six runs - four earned - on seven hits while strikeout out three and walking one in three innings.
Junior
Kristina Gutierrez pitched the final three innings while allowing one run on four hits.
Midwestern State plays host to the Wildcats Thursday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch for the twin bill is set for 1 p.m.
