WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Coming close has been a staple for Midwestern State all season long and finishing has been particularly painful during Lone Star Conference South Divison play.
The Mustangs had no problems in the final minutes Saturday night as MSU overcame a 14-point deficit to claim its first divisional win by knocking off Abilene Christian 64-61 Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Savannah Carver highlighted a 13-3 run by the Mustangs over the final 4:20 with a 3-pointer from the corner to give MSU its first lead in the second half at 60-59 with 1:26 to go.
Abilene Christian responded with a jumper by Jamie Meyer to reclaime the lead at 61-60 lead with 45 seconds left.
That's when
Nolisha Markham took over as she hit a jumper with 30 seconds remaining, then blocked Jody Meyer's point-blank range wth 14 seconds remaining and put the contest away with a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left.
Carver paced the Mustangs with a career-high 22 points including three 3-pointers, while Markham added 15 points off of the bench.
Jamie Meyer paced ACU with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while twin sister Jody Meyer added 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Mustangs, who improved to 7-17 overall and 1-10 in the LSC South, play host to Angelo State Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Abilene Christian slipped to 15-10 and 5-5.
