Midwestern survives Perkins, Rambelles 69-67

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Angelo State's Camille Perkins did everything she could to keep the Rambelles' fledgling playoff hopes alive Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The junior guard matched a career high with 35 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome a gutsy effort by Midwestern State as the Mustangs claimed their second-sraight win 69-67.

MSU's Nolisha Markham scored 15 of her team-high 21 points in the second half as the Mustangs led throughout the second half, but had to hold off the Belles' late run.

Midwestern led by as many as 11 points when Savannah Carver connected on a 3-pointer with 10:08 to play to give the Mustangs a 52-41 advantage.

MSU maintained its advantage and led 66-58 when Markham converted a fastbreak layup with 2:49 to play, but the Rambelles wouldn't go away.

Christie Rasmussen nailed consecutive treys to cut the Mustangs' advantage to 66-64 with 1:41 to play.

Cierra Thompson hit a tough jumper in the lane to push the lead to 68-64, but Perkins charged down the floor and converted a traditional three-point play to cut the lead to a single point with 27 seconds to play.

That's as close as the 'Belles would get as MSU turned up the defense to force a pair of turnovers in the final 11 seconds to preserve the victory.

Thompson would add 15 points in 27 minutes of actiion, while sophomore Savannah Carver pitched in 11 points and four rebounds and Andrea Buben had nine points and four steals.

Senior point guard Michelle Duff paced the offense with seven assists and three turnovers in 27 minutes of court time.

Perkins connected on 12-of-23 shots from the floor including four 3-pointers and was 7-of-9 from the charity stripe, and had four steals, but was harrassed into eight turnovers.

Rasmussen was the only other Rambelle in double figures with 12 points off of the bench.

Midwestern State, which won its second-straight game for the third time this season, closes the season at Incarnate Word on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.

Angelo State slipped to 12-13 and 5-6.
