Tanner, Petersen pitch Mustangs to two more invitational wins

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Pitching and lots of it were once again the key for Midwestern State as the Mustangs improved to 4-0 with wins over Texas Woman's University and West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Junior Brittney Tanner weaved a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and two walks to improve to 2-0 with a 2-1 win over Texas Woman's University.

The Mustangs plated the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Megan Chartier beat the third baseman's toss to the plate afeter Elena Bennett laid down a suicide squeeze for the game winner.

TWU actually struck first when Jordan Readicker's run-scoring triple to the left-field gap scored April Mandel, who had reach on a walk to lead off the fourth inning.

Midwestern struck back with a run on McKenzie Sickler's RBI single to left field scored Mallory Mooney, who had led off the bottom of the fifth with a single before the Mustangs loaded the bases.

The score would remain tied until Katie Petersen led off the seventh with a pinch hit single and was lifted for the pinch running Chartier.

Chartier was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on the groundout before scoring on Sickler's suicide squeeze bunt.

Senior pitcher Katie Petersen continued to dominate in the second game as she fanned 10 and walked four while delivering her second-straight shutout in a 4-0 win over West Texas A&M.

The shutout followed her second career perfect game Friday afternoon against Western New Mexico.

The Mustangs took advantage of three Lady Buff errors to plate three runs in the third which was headlined by an RBI-single by Courtney Bingham.

MSU added a run in the fifth off of a Mallory Mooney single to left field.

The Mustangs, who improved to 7-2 on the season, close the Holiday Inn at the Falls/MSU Invitational with a 1 p.m. showdown with Missouri Southern. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
