MSU rolls to five-straight wins at President’s Day Invitational

PHOENIX - Midwestern State dominated to go 5-0 in the President's Day Tournament hosted by Grand Canyon College over the weekend at the Paseo Racquet Club.

The Mustangs improved to 5-2 after suffering season opening losses to Oklahoma Christian and Abilene Christian indoors last weekend in Abilene.

Midwestern State rolled past Montana State-Billings 9-0 Thursday afternoon at the Paseo Racquet Club.

The Yellowjackets advanced to the NCAA Division II Championships Round of 16 in 2009.

Midwestern State's No. 3 doubles partners Lindsey Holcomb and Lauren Huse edged Grand Canyon's Stefanie Griffin and Ali Brackey 9-8 by taking a 7-5 tiebreaker to provide the difference in the Mustangs' 5-4 win over the host Antelopes Friday at the Paseo Racquet Club.

Holcomb and Huse gave MSU momentum with a 2-1 doubles' edge before the Mustangs rattled off straight-set victories at the Nos. 3-5 singles positions to hold off Grand Canyon.

Midwestern State kept on rolling with a sweep of Dixie State (Utah) for their third-straight win Saturday afternoon at the Paseo Racquet Club.

Lindsey Holcomb battled back from a 6-2 opening set loss to Courtney Kezerian to take the second set 6-2 and finished off the tiebreaker 10-4 to clinch the 9-0 rout.

Midwestern State rocked the Academy of Arts (Calif.) Urban Knights 6-0 Sunday at the Paseo Racquet Club.

The Mustangs swept doubles play, then Leah Roberts, Monica Graff and Lindsey Holcomb took straight-set wins to clinch MSU's fourth-straight victory.

Midwestern State used a strong singles' showing to overcome a doubles sweep and Chaminade (Hawaii) by a 6-3 margin Sunday at the Paseo Racquet Club.

No. 2 Kaja Banas and No. 5 Lindsey Holcomb shook off first set defeats to close a pair of singles wins.

Banas defeated Chaminade's Tiffany DeVincent 0-6, 7-6, 11-9, while Holcomb took Silkie Kawahakui 2-6, 6-1, 10-7.
