SWOSU's Fisher sinks Mustangs with late trey, 71-69

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Michelle Fisher's 3-pointer from the left wing lifted Southwestern Oklahoma State to a 71-69 Lone Star Conference Crossover win over Midwestern State Saturday afternoon at Rankin Williams Fieldhouse.

Fisher's third trey of the game nullified a courageous second half comeback by the Mustangs.

MSU overcame a 15-point second half deficit as Southwestern led 46-31 when Sumiya Darden completed a three-point play with 15:48 remaining.

Junior forward Savannah Carver, who tallied 17 of her game-high 23 points in the second half, sparked a 10-0 run with a 15-foot jumper from the right wing at the 12:53 mark as the Mustangs clawed to within 51-48 on a pair of Kirsti Degelia free throws with 11:03 to play.

Midwestern pulled even at 58-58, 60-60 and 62-all on consecutive layups by Carver and another from Nolisha Markham before Degelia canned her first field goal of the contest on a 3-pointer from the right wing to stake MSU to a 65-62 lead at the 3:59 mark.

Southwestern reclaimed the lead at 68-66 on a Darden layup with 32.6 seconds to play.

MSU junior Cierra Thompson connected on one of two free throws while Carver hit a tough layup in transition to give the Mustangs a 69-68 advantage with 22.9 seconds remaining.

The Mustangs tightened up on the defensive end by forcing a SWOSU turnover with 12.6 to play. The Bulldogs immediately fouled Thompson, who missed the front end of the one-and-one.

Darden scrambled for the rebound and drove the length of the floor before dishing out to Fisher who buried the winning 3-pointer.

Carver was joined in double figures by Degelia (11 points, four assists, six steals), Markham (11 points, seven rebounds) and Thompson (10 points).

Darden paced SWOSU with 15 points and nine rebounds while Fisher, Ashley Rush and Holly Jennings each pitched in 12.

Midwestern State (2-4) takes on Cameron Monday night at Aggie Gym in Lawton, Okla. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Southwestern Oklahoma improved to 7-1.
