WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 19 Midwestern State felt fortunate at intermission of the Lone Star Conference Championship final Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
The Mustangs had survived a stiff South wind, an even more persistent Abilene Christian attack and a shot off of the crossbar in the final minute before intermission.
"That was the worst half we've played and we just weren't very aggressive," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "And really don't know why."
Midwestern got the wind in the second half, but nothing changed.
Andrea Carpenter and Katherine Garner buried opportunities to carry Abilene Christian to a 2-0 win for the Wildcats first Lone Star Conference championship.
The Mustangs must now await official selection into the NCAA Division II postseason set for Monday night via a video streaming on NCAA.com. A public watch party is set for 6 p.m. at Buffalo Wild Wings.
"We've still had a great season and we've got to keep the mindset that we haven't played our last game," Trimble said. "This is still a special team that has more to accomplish."
The Mustangs were going for their third LSC championship and playing in their first final since 2005. MSU claimed its first regular season championship since 1998.
Midwestern's junior forward combo of
Lindsay Pritchard and
Kelsey Hill combined for eight of the Mustangs' nine shots while ACU goalkeeper Elliott London made six saves. None of the shots were threatening.
Holton took a through ball in the 51st minute and hammered a shot that was saved by MSU keeper
Mallory Whitworth. Carpenter scooped and knocked in her 19th goal of the season off of the rebound from the penalty kick marker for the first goal of the contest.
Nineteen minutes later, Carpenter held off two MSU defenders to serve the ball ahead to Garner for her third tally of the season to put the game out of reach for the Mustangs.
Abilene Christian improved to 16-3 while gaining the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA postseason, while the Mustangs fell to the same 16-3 mark.
