WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Megan Buri scored two goals in 29 seconds as Truman eliminated Midwestern State 3-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Championship Friday at Jennies Field.
Buri, a junior from Parkville, Mo., launched a shot from 30 yards out in the 15th minute just out of the reach of MSU goalkeeper
Mallory Whitworth for the first tally of the match before disaster struck for the Mustangs.
"We lost possession of the kickoff and they crossed a harmless ball into the box that just went through her hands," Trimble said. "A wet ball in the air is just hard for the keeper to handle. It was unfortunate. She is one of the best goalkeepers to ever play at MSU."
It was Buri again who collected the loose ball to bury it in the net to give Truman a commanding 2-0 lead less than 15 minutes into the match.
The Bulldogs adjusted to the pouring rain conditions which persisted through the opening 30 minutes of the match and even forced a 30-minute delay for the start time.
"Central Missouri did a great job of preparing the field after it had rained all morning," Trimble said. "But it's just something both teams had to play through."
Truman countered an MSU corner two minutes into the second half to earn a corner of their won. Again, the Bulldogs capitalized with a Jaclyn Schumann tally for a 3-0 lead.
The Mustangs scrambled to create chance after chance and finally scratched the scoreboard in the 76th minute when
Mickey Brown trapped a cross from
Kelsey Hill, then buried her fifth goal of the season passed Truman keeper Emily Bozdeck.
"That was a really good illustration of us never giving up," Trimble said. "We played really good soccer to try to come back and just couldn't do it. Truman plays really good, solid soccer and it was just a really good NCAA tournament game. These girls have nothing to be ashamed of."
Seniors
Kendra Clemons,
Brandy O'Neal,
Brittany Subia and
Jordan Smith completed a stellar four-year career by helping the Mustangs to 55 wins and a Lone Star Conference regular season championship this season culminating in the program's first NCAA postseason appearance.
"The four seniors played really, really well," Trimble said. "They have no reason to hang their heads. They had tremendous careers and will be missed."
Truman (11-3-5) moves on to face host Central Missouri in the second round Sunday afternoon while the Mustangs close the season at 16-4.
