Chargers outrun Midwestern, 72-59

AUSTIN - Lea Jones dropped in a game-high 17 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds to lead Hillsdale (Mich.) to a 72-59 win over Midwestern State in the St. Edward's Shootout Saturday afternoon at the SEU Recreation and Convocation Center.

The Mustangs, who fell to 0-2 on the season, next play Hillsdale Freewill Baptist in their home opener on Mon., Nov. 22. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Chargers jumped out to a 10-point lead when Hilldale's Elizabeth Brannick hit a jumper to finish off a 7-0 run and give the Chargers a 20-10 advantage with 9:17 to play in the first half.

That's when MSU freshman guard Kirsti Degelia got work by scoring the next nine MSU with three layup and a 3-pointer as the Mustangs worked a 7-0 run of their own to pull back to within 24-21 on a Cierra Thompson jumper in the paint with 5:37 to play in the opening half.

In half of runs, Hillsdale answered with another 7-0 run before the Mustangs countered with nine straight points to cut the Chargers' advantage to 31-30 on a Karissa Lang jumper with 40 seconds to play.

The Chargers worked the lead back into double figures in the second half as the Mustangs were unable to range any closer than five.

Junior forward Cierra Thompson paced the Mustangs with 14 points and seven rebounds and Degelia added 12 points and five rebounds.

Junior forward Jazman Patterson snagged nine boards as the Mustangs held a 38-36 lead on the glass.

Hillsdale improved to 2-0 including a win over Abilene Christian Friday afternoon.
