For the record
The rivalry is quickly growing between the Lone Star Conference powers as four of the last six games have been decided by five or fewer points.
The teams tangled in a pair of classics last season as Midwestern State scrapped for a 15-13 win in the regular season finale to gain the home field against the Wildcats, who just a week later avenged the loss with a 24-21 win to advance in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
The Mustangs haven't had the best of luck at Shotwell Stadium where they have posted a 2-6 mark all-time against the Wildcats, but the two victories were definitely memorable.
MSU claimed a 29-19 victory in 2004 for a share of its first LSC South Division title and advanced to the NCAA postseason for the first time in school history.
The Mustangs then rode a gutsy effort by Daniel Polk who passed for 205 yards and four touchdowns despite missing a whole series with an injured ankle to lift No. 22 MSU to a 46-30 win over No. 18 Abilene Christian in 2006.
Midwestern claimed its first playoff victory a week later over Missouri Western.
The win at Shotwell Stadium still stands as the Mustangs lone victory over a ranked opponent on the road in 13 tries.
Who's hot
Junior wide receiver David Little had a career game last week as he set a school record with 14 receptions for 181 yards and a touchdown to lift Midwestern to a 38-31 overtime win last Saturday against Incarnate Word.
It was the fourth biggest day in school history in terms of receiving yardage and the most since Kendrick Gibson win for 189 yards at Southeastern Oklahoma in 2001.
It was also Little's second career 100-yard receiving day as the Monroe, La. native caught five passes for 105 yards last season at Tarleton State.
Senior quarterback Zack Eskridge is warming to the task delivering his third-straight 200-yard passing performance last week against Incarnate Word.
The 2009 Harlon Hill finalist delivered his sixth 300-yard performance and first in 2010 by connecting on 27-of-37 for 317 yards and three touchdowns.
Eskridge has completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 10 touchdowns and has thrown just one interception this season.
Junior defensive lineman J.D. Corcoran was all over the field in last week's win over Incarnate Word.
The Lake Arrowhead, Calif. native joined teammate Ryan Craven with a game-high 13 tackles while Matt Ellerbrock had 12 stops.
No Mustangs player had tallied more than eight tackles in the four previous games.
About the series
Midwestern State meets Abilene Christian for the 25th time on the gridiron Saturday afternoon at Shotwell Stadium.
The Wildcats own an 18-5-1 edge, but MSU has won four of the last seven meetings between the squads dating back to the start of the 2004 season.
Midwestern is 2-6 all-time at Shotwell Stadium and 4-5 during the Bill Maskill era which includes a loss which was vacated by ACU for NCAA rules violations.
