Damjanovic leads Mustangs past Eastern New Mexico, 3-1

PORTALES, N.M. - Karolina Damjanovic's attacking efficiency paced Midwestern State to a 25-13, 14-25, 25-16, 25-20 Lone Star Conference win over Eastern New Mexico Thursday night at Greyhound Arena.

The Mustangs improved to 10-7 for the season and to 4-1 in conference play and take on LSC powerhouse West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon in Canyon. First serve is set for 1 p.m.

"We played well and we're happy to get out of here with the win," MSU coach Venera Flores-Stafford said.

Damjanovic, a senior from Subotica, Serbia, delivered her eighth double figure kill performance of the season to finish with a match-high 14 while committing just two errors in 26 attacks for a .462 hitting percentage.

Juniors Hillary White and Miranda Byrd added eight kills each, while senior middle blocker Lauren Bayer notched seven to go along with a team-high six total blocks.

The Mustangs' defense stifled the Zias' attack in the first set forcing them into 10 miscues in the opening set as ENMU managed a .074 team hitting percentage.

But MSU struggled through the second set committing 10 of its 21 attack errors for the match allowing the Zias to even the match at one set each.

"We did a good job of regaining our composure and intensity from that point on," Flores-Stafford said.

The Mustangs would hit .256 over the final two sets to close out the match.

Junior libero Kiara Jordan led the back row efforts with her second straight 20-dig performance and fourth in her last six matches as the Gilmer product finished with a match-high 25 digs.

White and Byrd also tallied 12 digs each for MSU.

Eastern New Mexico was paced by junior middle blocker Kristen Beck's 12-kill effort, while sophomore outside hitter Amber Durand notched 23 digs.

The Zias fell to 8-10 and 1-3.
