WICHITA FALLS, Texas - This was a game Midwestern State had circled on its calendar.
The Mustangs hadn't forgotten how East Central had come into the MSU Soccer Field and spoiled their highest national ranking and an unbeaten record last season.
And the celebration and "overrated" chants by the ECU players still reverberated 12 months later.
It was definitely a different scene Sunday afternoon as Midwestern left a different kind of impression on the Lady Tigers in an 8-0 Lone Star Conference thrashing to improve to 8-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in league play at 3-0.
"After getting beat last year, we certainly wanted to make an impact on the game," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "We've talked about it a lot and it was great for all of the girls to come with that intensity."
The Mustangs abused the Lady Tigers' flat-back trap early and often as seven different players got in on the scoring act led by
Kelsey Hill's eighth career multiple-goal game.
The junior from Wichita Falls who finished the match with two goals and a pair of assists got the Mustangs started by chipping in a rebound for her sixth tally of the season in the third minute.
MSU's lead doubled after Hill popped a crossing pass from the right wing and
Jordan Smith centered with a header for a
Brandy O'Neal finish in the 29th minute.
Senior midfielder
Kendra Clemons tacked on a third goal on a 20-yard bomb from near the top of the box after collecting a misclear in the 43rd minute to give the Mustangs a 3-0 advantage at intermission.
Hill also got Midwestern started in the second half after taking a through ball from Clemons and easily dribbled past the charging ECU keeper before carrying the ball all the way to the net for her seventh goal of the season in the 57th minute.
Freshman
Jeri Hicks, junior
Audra Jesse and frosh
Emily Saville each tallied their first goals of the season at in the 66th, 73rd and 89th minutes, respectively.
Midwestern State plays host to Eastern New Mexico Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
