Southwestern Oklahoma puts bite on Mustangs, 3-2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Southwestern Oklahoma's LaKendra Sanders put down 12 kills to spoil Shelbi Stewart career night as the Bulldogs staved off Midwestern State 16-25, 25-18, 27-25, 7-25, 15-13 in Lone Star Conference action Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Mustangs have now dropped to 12-13 on the season and 6-5 in conference play after losing six of their last eight.

The Bulldogs averted their longest losing streak of the season by ending the current skid at four matches to improve to 9-19 on the season and 2-9 in the LSC.

Stewart enjoyed a stellar evening logging a career-high 17 kills while committing six errors for a .306 hitting percentage while finishing off her fourth double-double of the campaign with 10 digs.

The Mustangs flustered Southwestern Oklahoma in the 12 errors in the opening set as senior middle blocker Lauren Bayer controlled play at the net with two solo stuffs and three block assists.

The Mustangs wouldn't record another block until the fourth set as the Bulldogs capitalized by taking control of the match as SWOSU rebounded to hit a combined .286 as a team in the second and third sets after posting paltry -.081 in the opening set.

Junior Hillary White, who enjoyed an 11-kill and 17-dig performance, held serve for 17 consecutive points as the Mustangs pushed a deciding set by rolling the Bulldogs 25-7.

Both teams struggled with service reception in the fifth set before SWOSU libero Sladjana Simic held serve during a four-point run which allowed the Bulldogs to take control at 13-8 after Stephanie Parker's seventh kill.

The Mustangs would fight back to 14-13 after an SWOSU service error before Sanders put away the final point to secure the win for the Bulldogs.

Junior outside hitter Miranda Byrd added 15 kills and senior right-side hitter Karolina Damjanovic added 10 kills of her own, while libero Taylor Parker led back line efforts with 19 digs.

Midwestern State plays host to Central Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at Ligon Coliseum. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
