PLAINVIEW, Texas - Midwestern State and Wayland Baptist exchanged haymakers in the opening sets Tuesday night at Hutcherson Center as the Mustangs recovered from a 15-25 thumping to even the match 25-11.
But the Pioneers proved they could close the tight sets as well rolling to a 3-1 win taking the third and fourth stanzas by matching 25-21 counts.
The loss snaps MSU's modest two-match win streak as the Mustangs fall to 12-12, while Wayland Baptist won for the eighth time in nine tries in October to roll to 15-7 on the season.
Freshman
Caitlin Wallace paced the Midwestern attack by putting down 12 kills with one error in 18 attempts for a season-best .611 hitting percentage, while senior right-side hitter
Karolina Damjanovic finished with 10 kills and a .304 hitting percentage.
Senior middle blocker
Lauren Bayer led MSU at the net with six total blocks while Wallace contributed four of Midwestern's 10 total team blocks.
Junior outside hitter
Hillary White led back row efforts with 18 digs, while libero
Mallory Goon finished with 14.
Junior setter
Taryn Westerman completed her fifth double-double of the season with 21 set assists and 11 digs.
Wayland Baptist enjoyed an all-around performance from Kate Trejo who finished with a match-high 15 kills and added 15 digs, while setter Anika Voigt paced the Pioneers with 41 set assists and 16 digs.
Midwestern State returns to Lone Star Conference play Thursday night against Southwestern Oklahoma State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
