SAN ANGELO, Texas - Ashley Brown's breakaway goal with 12 seconds remaining in regulation lifted Angelo State to a 1-0 win over No. 18 Midwestern State Sunday afternoon at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Rambelles, who improved to 10-5-1 on the season and to 7-2 in Lone Star Conference play, took advantage of an MSU turnover in the midfield as Hanna Horeis tapped the ball ahead to Brown, who buried a shot from just inside the box for the game winner.
"A number of things can happen in that situation like a miss-hit dribble," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "But everything went right for them on the counterattack. You have to credit Angelo State today."
Midwestern, which was playing without starters
Brittany Subia and
Heidi Avila, had its 10-match winning streak snapped to fall to 13-2 on the season and into a tie with Abilene Christian for the conference lead at 8-1.
By virtue of their head-to-head win over ACU, the Mustangs control their destiny and can clinch their first regular season league title since 1998 with two wins next weekend over Texas Woman's University on Friday and Sunday at Texas A&M-Commerce. With the wins, MSU would also play host to the LSC Postseason Tournament set for Nov. 4-7.
The Mustangs failed to take advantage of opportunities not reflected on Sunday's stat sheet as they placed two shots off of the crossbar and hit the post on another effort despite officially being credited with three shots in the second half.
Officially, the Rambelles limited MSU to a season-high five shots on goal and to its lowest shot output during conference play with nine.
Angelo State goalkeeper Melanie Peterson's one-on-one save of
Kelsey Hill's breakaway shot in the 23rd minute kept the score scoreless into intermission.
"We didn't take advantage of the opportunities we had," Trimble said. "I felt like they outplayed us in the first half, but came out and played well in the second."
