Westerman led Mustangs dust TWU, 3-1

DENTON, Texas - Midwestern State used an efficient attack to batter Texas Woman's University for a 25-21, 18-25, 25-18, 25-19 Lone Star Conference win Saturday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena.

The Mustangs have recovered a four-game skid to win their last two conference games to improve to 12-11 on the season and to 6-4 in league play.

"They are very good team and their block was really on," MSU coach Venera Flores-Stafford said. "We talked about the things we needed to do differently and Taryn (Westerman) did a good job of carrying the plan out."

The junior transfer from Liberal, Kan. piloted the MSU to a .236 team attack percentage while notching 43 set assists and finishing off her fourth double-double of the season with 10 digs. Westerman added five kills.

Senior right-side hitter Karolina Damjanovic paced the Mustangs with 14 kills while committing just three errors in 36 attempts to hit .306.

Sophomore outside hitter Shelbi Stewart continued her stellar play with 13 kills and hit .400, while senior middle blocker Lauren Bayer added 10 kills and hit .400.

"Taryn did a good job of spreading the offense out," Flores-Stafford said. "She recognized where the one-on-one opportunities were and was able to find a lot of gaps."

Bayer and Westerman also played a big role in the Mustangs' efforts at the net where the duo accounted for nine and eight total blocks respectively as MSU notched 14 total team blocks.

Junior Kiara Jordan and Hillary White paced back row efforts with 16 and 15 digs respectively follwed by Westerman and Stewart, who had 10 digs each.

Andrea Rivera-Rojas paced the Pioneers with 16 kills, while Chloe' Tate led defensive efforts with 11 kills and eight total blocks. Kendra Coulson added a match-high 17 digs for TWU.

Midwestern State takes on Wayland Baptist Tuesday night Plainview before returning home for a pair of LSC matches against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday and Central Oklahoma on Saturday.
