WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State had two swings to knock down No. 21 Abilene Christian in Lone Star Conference action Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
But the Mustangs just couldn't close the deal allowing the ACU to extend the match and slip away with an 18-25, 22-25, 28-26, 25-22, 15-13 victory to improve to 18-3 on the season and remained a perfect 7-0 in league play.
Midwestern, which slipped to 10-9 and 4-3, took the upper hand in the first two sets limiting ACU's potent attack to a .083 hitting percentage in the opening set and to .075 in the second and appeared to be on the verge of closing out the Wildcats in the third set.
Sophomore
Hillary White put down one of her 11 kills to give the Mustangs their first match point at 24-23, but the Wildcats answered with a Shawna Hines kill.
Three points later, senior
Karolina Damjanovic gave MSU its second and final match point at 26-25 before ACU responded with consecutive kills by Jordan Schilling and Jennie Hutt before a Mustangs' attack error gave the Wildcats their first set win.
Abilene Christian then completed the comeback by taking the final two sets.
Sophomore right-side
Shelbi Stewart paced the MSU attack with 15 kills and added 10 digs and Damjanovic continued her stellar play with 14 kills while committing three errors in 42 attempts for a .262 attack percentage.
Junior libero
Kiara Jordan paced MSU backline efforts with 30 digs, while White and
Miranda Byrd finished with 24 and 22 digs, respectively.
MSU also enjoyed strong efforts from middle blockers
Lauren Bayer (nine kills, five total blocks) and
Caitlin Wallace (six kills, six total blocks).
ACU was paced offensively by Jennie Hutt's 16-kill performance, while libero Kelsie Edwards finished with a match-high 35 digs to lead back row efforts.
Setter Ijeoma Moronu record a triple double with 51 assists, 24 digs and 10 total blocks to go along with seven kills.
The Mustangs host Angelo State Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
