WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Kiara Jordan came within one dig of a school record, but the sophomore libero's acrobatics on the back line weren't enough Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Wayland Baptist's Kimberli Harger found plenty of space to put down a match-high 22 kills as the Pioneers rallied to take the final two sets to come away with a 3-2 non-conference win.
The Pioneers, who improved to 13-2 on the season, snapped a seven-match skid against MSU, who dipped to 5-14.
Harger's heroics spoiled yet another stellar night by MSU freshman
Shelbi Stewart.
The freshman from Pflugerville fell one kill shy of her third-straight 15-kill match, but was almost perfect against the Pioneers.
Stewart knocked 14 loud kills in 38 attempts while committing just one error for a season-high .341 hitting percentage.
The Mustangs placed three others with 10-or-more kills as
Miranda Byrd finished 15 and
Sesley Graves added 12.
Junior middle blocker
Lauren Bayer closed a solid performance with 10 kills while hitting .280 and got her hands on six of the Mustangs' eight total team blocks.
The Mustangs recovered to claim the third set by a 25-18 margin after the teams split the opening sets 25-17, 19-25 and seemed to have momentum.
But the Pioneers limited MSU to a .107 team hitting percentage while taking the final two sets, 25-23, 15-8.
Jordan, who has recorded at least 30 digs in her last two matches, finished one dig shy of the school record of 38 set by Tina Bradford and Beth Sadler, while sophomore outside hitter
Hillary White went over the 20-dig mark for the third time this season with 22.
The Mustangs battle St. Mary's and Incarnate Word Friday in San Antonio before taking on Texas A&M International Saturday.
