WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Cameron brought a big crowd and gaudy record into D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Thursday night's Lone Star Conference opener.
Midwestern State made sure the visitors left unhappy as
Miranda Byrd and
Hillary White posted double-doubles to lead the Mustangs to a 3-1 win.
MSU improved to 3-12, but remains unbeaten in league play at 1-0, while the Aggies dropped to 10-3 and 0-1.
The Mustangs frustrated Cameron from the outset as the Aggies were forced into an uncharacteristic 31 errors and hit just .091. CU came into the match with the second-best attack in the LSC at .221.
The Aggies lost conference player of the week Malyssa Acton to an apparent leg injury midway through the opening set and just couldn't recover as the Mustangs took the opening sets 25-19 and 25-22.
Cameron did rebound to take the third set 29-27 before MSU closed out the match 25-23.
Byrd finished with 14 kills and 10 digs, while White had 12 kills and 17 digs, while sophomore setter
Kiara Jordan led the back row with a career-best 30 digs.
Senior middle blocker
Sesley Graves added a solid night on the attack with 13 kills and added three total blocks.
The Mustangs' setter combination of
Dimery Michaels and
Kimberly Jeffrey produced solid performances with a combined 49 assists.
Michaels finished with 31 assists, while Jeffrey finished with 18 assists and narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs.
Sophomore right-side hitter
Tiana Bond had four total blocks to pace the Mustangs at the net.
Kellie Dickerson had 17 kills to pace the Aggies, while Adrienne Lawson and Lindsay Paziuk had 18 digs to lead the defensive effort.
Midwestern State hits the road to face Lubbock Christian next Tuesday with a 6 p.m. first serve.
