KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Missouri Western rallied for three-straight points to force a fifth and deciding set Friday afternoon at the Rockhurst Classic at Mason Halpin Fieldhouse.
Midwestern State had claimed the first two sets 25-16 and 25-20 while holding the Griffons to a negative hitting percentage.
But the Griffons awoke and erupted to claim the final three sets 25-14, 25-23 and 15-8 for their sixth-straight win to improve to 7-3, while MSU dropped to 1-10.
The Mustangs close the tournament with matches against Fort Hays State (Kan.) and host Rockhurst (Mo.) Saturday at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
MSU rallied from a 21-18 deficit in the fourth set and was on the verge of earning a match point opportunity after subsequent kills by
Sesley Graves,
Shelbi Stewart and
Hillary White were followed by a forced attacking error on Missouri Western's Kelli Sicner and a bad set by Griffon setter Hannah Zimmerman to give the Mustangs a 23-22 advantage.
But Missouri Western rattled off three-straight points and forced a fifth set when Zimmerman's dump found the follow to give the Griffons a 25-22 set win.
Sophomore outside hitter
Miranda Byrd paced the Mustangs' attack with 12 kills and made just two errors in 21 attack attempts for a .476 hitting percentage, while Graves and White finished with nine and eight kills respectively.
Freshman
Kimberly Jeffrey had 23 assists and sophomore
Dimery Michaels added 13 more as the Mustangs finished the match with a .104 team hitting percentage.
Sophomore libero
Kiara Jordan had 22 digs to lead MSU's back row efforts, while White and Byrd had nine digs each.
Junior middle blocker
Lauren Bayer joined Graves with three total blocks while White, Byrd and
Tiana Bond added two blocks each to account the Mustangs' seven total team blocks.
Sicner paced the Griffons with 13 kills, while Lauren Burbach recorded a double-double with 22 assists and 13 digs.
Alexandra Behnke accounted for seven block assists at the net as Missouri Western recorded 11 total blocks as a team.
