Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

#5 MSU pounds way past St. Edward’s, 1-0

AUSTIN, Texas - Midwestern State just couldn't find the net Sunday afternoon at the SEU Soccer Field.

But finally persistence paid off in the 88th minute when junior Bryce Taylor banked a through ball off of the post and into the goal to give the Mustangs a 1-0 decision over St. Edward's.

"The guys will be surprised to see we only had 18 sbbbhots on the stat sheet. It seemed like so many more," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "We had a ton of chances, a lot of shots blocked and a shot was cleared off of the line. We just kept pounding it and pounding it."

Finally Paulo Teixiera served a ball into the box that found Taylor's feet, but even when the junior transfer served the shot toward the open net at the far post, the MSU bench personnel still held their breath.

"It looked like the defender had a play on it, but we weren't sure if it was going in," Elder said.

But the ball hit the post and bounded into the net allowing the Mustangs to even their season record at 1-1, while St. Edward's dropped to 0-2 after falling to West Texas A&M 3-0 earlier in the week.

Midwestern could have easily posted a similar result as it peppered Hilltopper keeper Matt Moore with 18 shots, including nine on goal while St. Edward's managed just a pair of shots with one falling on frame.

"We had a lot of opportunities, but we need to start finishing them," Elder said. "Hopefully coming back home will help us."

Junior goalkeeper Raul Herrera posted his first shutout of the season and has yet to allow a goal in the run of play this season.

The Mustangs returns to the MSU Soccer Field for their home opener next Friday against No. 21 Metro State (Colo.). Kickoff is set for approximately 7:30 p.m. or after the conclusion of the Northeastern State/Regis contest which will kick off at 5:30.
