Sutherland fuels Mustangs past No. 13 Metro State, 2-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Craig Sutherland reset the tone for No. 21 Midwestern State Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

The fleet sophomore took a through back from Brian Martinez, slipped the keeper in the sixth minute to give the Mustangs momentum as MSU rolled to a 2-1 win over No. 13 Metro State, who went a man in the 40th minute.

"I don't think the ejection made much of a difference," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "When we play at speed, we're a good team. When we don't, we are very average and we had a good 30-minute spell tonight."

The Roadrunners, who have never won against Midwestern State in now 12 tries, took advantage of a restart to net the equalizer in the 20th minute before newcomer Allen Thomson forced a header off of Metro defender Tyler Hambrick's leg for an own goal in the 40th minute.

"The ball went off his knee much like the goal the one we suffered at Incarnate Word," Elder said. "To win 2-1 at home against ranked opponent will give us confidence moving forward."

The Mustangs, who have now won 11-straight matches at the MSU Soccer Field, play host to Regis (Colo.) Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

That game will be preceded by a neutral contest pitting Northeastern State and Metro State at 11 a.m.
