ABILENE, Texas - Midwestern State just kept putting the ball in play in Saturday afternoon's elimination game against Central Oklahoma at Wells Field.
And the Bronchos were in the right spot each time, limiting the Mustangs to three hits and allowing Kelsey Tiger's RBI single in the first inning to stand up for a 1-0 UCO win in the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament.
The loss eliminated Midwestern and dropped the Mustangs to 31-17 on the season. MSU, which was ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings, must now await selection in two weeks to learn it will extend its streak of postseason appearances to six.
Senior first baseman
Jessica Rodriguez roped a double to the right-field gap to lead off the seventh inning, but the Mustangs were unable to advance pinch runner
Miranda Jarrell any farther.
Lauren Craig was unable to put down the bunt then grounded out to shortstop before
Mallory Mooney skied to left field before
Katie Petersen drew a two-out walk.
Central Oklahoma starter Molly Shivers then got MSU freshman pinch hitter
Brittany Dumas swinging to close out the game for her strikeout of the game.
Shivers limited the Mustangs to a .130 batting average as the Mustangs put 23 balls in play, but were unable to score a run in 14 tournament innings spanning their first two shutouts of the season.
Shivers improved to 16-6 allowing just three hits with one strikeout and one walk to spoil a brilliant start by Midwestern's
Brittney Tanner.
Tanner limited the Bronchos to one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Maranda Bishop and
Amanda Potysman joined Rodriguez with a single hit apiece to account for the Mustangs' offensive production.
Central Oklahoma improved to 25-14.
