Gregoire, ACU leaves Mustangs stranded, 3-0

ABILENE, Texas - Abilene Christian's Jacque Gregoire dodged seven Midwestern State hits and four errors by her teammates hand the Mustangs their first shutout of the season 3-0 Friday night in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Championship at Wells Field.

Midwestern State, which fell to 31-16, faces Central Oklahoma in an elimination game Saturday afternoon at Wells Field. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.

The Bronchos suffered a 19-1 loss to West Texas A&M earlier Saturday afternoon.

Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M will play in the winner's bracket final at 11 a.m.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Nancy Sawyers drilled an 0-2 offering from MSU starter Katie Petersen into the left-field gap to plate two runners and highlight a three-hit inning.

Petersen settled in to retire the next 14 batters before Jackie Gentile delivered a one-out home run to left field to give the Wildcats a commanding three-run lead.

That prooved to be enough for Gregoire who worked around seven hits and four errors to strand nine runners as the Mustangs were shutout for the first time this season and for the first time since falling 1-0 to Southeastern Oklahoma State in the second round of the 2008 LSC Postseason Tournament.

The Mustangs stranded in five of the seven innings and two runners in the first, sixth and seven innings.

Gregoire improved to 20-4 with one strikeout and one walk, while Petersen slipped to 15-7 after yielding three runs - all earned - on four hits with nine strikeouts.

Senior first baseman Jessica Rodriguez went 3-for-3 to pace the Mustangs.
