Petersen delivers second-straight shutout, Mustangs take Game 2

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Katie Petersen extended her scoreless streak to 20 innings and drove in three runs at the plate as Midwestern State shutdown Northeastern State 7-0 in Game 2 Wednesday afternoon at RiverHawks Park.

Petersen delivered her second-straight shutout to improve to 15-6 while scattering six singles. The junior notched eight strikeouts without a walk.

Petersen has not allowed a run since surrendering a solo home run in a 4-2 win over No. 4 Southeastern Oklahoma State on April 7.

The was the fourth-straight for the Mustangs who improved to 31-16 on the season. MSU has now won eight of its last nine games going into this weekend's Lone Star Conference Tournament.

Midwestern faces Abilene Christian Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in the first round at the Abilene site which is one of two four-team double elimination tournaments with the other half in Durant, Okla. The winners advance to a best two-out-of-three series to determine the league champion next week at the site of the highest remaining seed.

Petersen delivered a run scoring single through the box as part of a two-run second inning to plate Lauren Craig before stroking a two-run double to the right-field gap in the third inning to give MSU a 5-0 lead.

Freshman catcher Brittany Dumas smacked her second home run of the season on a two-run shot in the sixth inning to close out scoring.

Senior first baseman Jessica Rodriguez paced MSU's 11-hit attack by going 3-for-4 while Maranda Bishop and Lauren Craig each extended their team-best active hitting streaks to five games.

Brandy Kimberlin legged out three hits and Jenny Collins went 2-for-3 to account for five of NSU's six hits.

The RiverHawks suffered their 14th consecutive loss and end the season with a 9-35 mark.
