Weary’s bases clearing double carries Mustangs in Game 2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Sarah Weary's bases clearing double with the bases loaded keyed a four-run third inning and lifted Midwestern State to a doubleheader sweep as the Mustangs doubled up Northeastern State 6-3 in Game 2 Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs, who have now won six of their last seven games, improved to 29-15 on the season and 13-9 in the Lone Star Conference North Division.

MSU closes its regular portion of the schedule when it plays host to Oklahoma Panhandle State for Senior Day Thursday afternoon at Mustangs Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

Northeastern State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Kylee McKinney's two-run single to the right-field gap in the first inning, but the Mustangs answered in the bottom of the inning when they knotted the game with two runs on five hits.

Maranda Bishop singled up the middle lead off the inning before Nicki Duff reached on an infield single.

MSU loaded the bases on Jessica Rodriguez's flair single to right field before Mallory Mooney and Lauren Craig connected on consecutive run scoring singles to tie the game at 2-2.

The RiverHawks surged back into the lead when Erica Holly singled home Shaelyn Moore, who reached on a one-out double to the left-field gap.

But Northeastern State couldn't hold the lead for long.

Rodriguez drew a one-out walk off of NSU starter Jenny Collins to kickstart the Mustangs' third-inning rally which appeared to flounder when Mooney was caught looking at a third strike on the chalk for the second out of the inning.

But Craig stroked a single to right field which got under Holly's glove which allowed Miranda Jarrell, who had pinch ran for Rodriguez, to score from first and knot the game at 3-3.

Kelli Ward followed with a single back through the box and Potysman drew a walk to lead the bases for Weary, who stroked her first double of the season to the left field gap to clear the bases and give the Mustangs a 6-3 lead.

MSU starter Brittney Tanner (13-7) made the lead stand to earn the win. The sophomore Burkburnett permitted three runs - all earned - on 10 hits with three walks. Tanner fanned a career-best 11 hitters.

Collins, who took the loss to fall to 3-11 for NSU, surrendered six runs - all earned - on 12 hits.

Weary paced Midwestern's 12-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with three RBIs while Nicki Duff, Craig and Ward each added two hits.

Holly had three hits of her own to pace the RiverHawks, while Megan Heskett, Brandy Kimberlin and Moore also had two hits each.

Northeastern State fell to 9-31 on the season and 4-18 in divisional play.

The teams complete their four-game set with a regular season ending twin bill Saturday in Tahlequah.
