Petersen locks down Northeastern State in opener, 6-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Katie Petersen took a perfect game into the sixth inning, but settled for a two-hit shutout to help Midwestern State to a 6-0 Lone Star Conference North Division win over Northeastern State Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Petersen improved to 14-6 on the season with her third shutout of the season while matching a campaign-best 13 strikeouts. She demonstrated perfect control while needing just 98 pitches to deliver her 70th career complete game.

Northeastern State's Megan Heskett broke up Petersen's bid for second career perfect game with a solid double to center field to lead off the sixth inning. Erica Holly would add a two-out single in the seventh inning.

But the Mustangs had the game well in hand by then.

Maranda Bishop's double to the left-field gap plated Amanda Potysman for MSU's first run of the contest in the third inning before Jessica Rodriguez launched a three-run homer to left field to give Midwestern a 4-0 lead.

The Mustangs tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning on Lauren Craig's two-run single to center field to push the advantage to 6-0.

Northeastern State starter Amy Derichsweiler took the loss to fall to 2-10 on the season. The senior right-hander allowed two runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings before she was pulled in favor of freshman Kylee McKinney after surrendering her first two hits after retiring the first six hitter she faced.

McKinney allowed four runs - all earned - on four hits with five walks over the final 3 2/3 innings.

Midwestern State improved to 28-15 on the season and 12-9 in the LSC North Division while the RiverHawks dropped to 9-30 and 4-17.
