Game Day: Mustangs kick off final LSC North series Tuesday against Northeastern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State opens the final week of the regular season with a pair of home doubleheaders at Mustangs Park.

MSU kicks off its final Lone Star Conference North Division series with two games against Northeastern State on Tuesday before closing the home portion of its schedule with a Senior Day twin bill against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday.

About the Mustangs

Midwestern State has locked up the No. 4 seed in the LSC North Division with no chance of improving its seeding for next weekend's Lone Star Conference postseason tournament.

The Mustangs will begin the modified championship which now mirrors the NCAA Division I Super Regional model against the South Division's top seed.

The tournament features a pair of double elimination, four-team tournaments to be played at the top seeds in each of the divisions.

The winner of the South Division will host the North Division's No. 2 and 4 seeds as well as the South's No. 3 team.

The winner of the North Division will host the South Division's No. 2 and 4 seeds as well as the North's No. 3 team.

The winners will square off for the conference championship the following week at the highest remaining seed's location.

The Mustangs won four of six games last week including a split with No. 4 Southeastern Oklahoma State, who had won eight-straight contests coming into the week.

MSU can finish 15-9 with four wins over NSU this week which would be percentage points behind Central Oklahoma if the Bronchos were to lose each of its four games against Cameron. If Cameron were drop all four games, the Aggies claimed three of four against the Mustangs this season for the tiebreaker.

Angelo State and Abilene Christian are tied at the top of the South Division standings with matching 12-3 marks, but the Rambelles hold 2-1 head-to-head edge over ACU.

Angelo State closes with three game at home against Texas A&M-Kingsville, while the Wildcats face Eastern New Mexico in Portales.

Who's hot

Freshman third baseman Mallory Mooney hit .400 (6-for-15) which included a double and a home run against All-America and seven-time Lone Star Conference North Division Pitcher of the Week Marjorie Johnson.

Johnson had permitted just three extra-base hits - a double, a triple and a home run - in just over 140 innings coming into the week.

Mooney turned on the hard throwing righty for a double down the left line on Tuesday before blasting her fourth home run of the season over the left-field wall in the first game Saturday at Durant.

Mooney also extended her string of flawless fielding to 26 games and 97 chances by fielding 24 chances cleanly and turning a pair of double plays. The Mesquite native leads all NCAA Division II third basemen with more than 80 chances in fielding percentage at .993 as she has committed just one error in 135 chances.

The RiverHawks are 4-16 in North Division play which includes three wins against East Central and another against Southwestern Oklahoma. NSU is 1-9 in divisional games away from Tahlequah this season.

Northeastern State is led at the plate by senior shortstop Shaelyn Moore, who is hitting .309 with a double, two triples, a pair of homers and 11 RBIs this season.
