First pitch for the twin bill is set for 2 p.m.
About the Mustangs
Midwestern State has shaken out of a four-game skid with a three-game winning streak which strarted with a come-from-behind win in the bottom of the seventh inning over No. 4 Southeastern Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The Mustangs reeled off a doubleheader sweep of Incarnate Word Wednesday afternoon in Wichita Falls taking the opener 6-3 before blasting the Cardinals 10-1 in five innings in the finale.
The two wins came after the Mustangs rallied to score a pair of runs in the seventh inning to score a 4-3 win over Southeastern and hand All-America pitcher Marjorie Johnson her second loss of the season in relief. Johnson fell to 20-2.
The Mustangs notched six hits in 8 1/3 innings against Johnson, who had limited the opposition to 19 hits in 143 1/3 innings prior to Tuesday's doubleheader.
Who's hot
There aren't many hotter hitters in NCAA Division II than Midwestern State's
Alyson Reynolds.
The sophomore outfielder from Keller is hitting .520 and slugging .920 over the Mustangs' last 10 games.
Reynolds is 13-of-25 at the plate with four doubles and a pair of homers while leading the team with nine RBIs over the past two weeks.
The hot stretch has lifted her season average to .404 with a team-best .683 slugging percentage.
You can't spell consistency without F-R-E-S-H-M-E-N
The Midwestern State freshman trio of
Sarah Weary,
Mallory Mooney and
Nicki Duff continue to turn heads in the Lone Star Conference North Division.
Consistent, and often times brillant, defensive play has played a major role in MSU's best defensive season to date as the Mustangs rate third in the league with a .970 team fielding percentage.
But the left side of the defense - Weary at shortstop, Mooney at third base and Duff in left field - is also getting done at the dish.
Weary has settled in nicely after spending time in the flex position through much of the early season. The Burkburnett product is hitting .379 over Midwestern's last 10 games to raise her season average to .368 and is second on the squad with 10 stolen bases. Weary accounted for her first career home run - of the the inside-the-park variety - Wednesday against Incarnate Word.
Mooney, who has committed just one error in 127 chances at the hot corner this season, is also a force at the plate where she has hit .383 with 10 doubles and three homers this season.
In fact, Mooney would be on pace to set the program's freshman record for batting average if it wasn't for Duff.
Duff, who has committed just one error in 41 chances with two outfield assists this season, leads the team with a .405 average and has shown exceptional speed with five doubles, four triples and has been caught one time in 18 stolen base attempts.
About the Savage Storm
No. 4 Southeastern Oklahoma State had its nine-game winning streak snapped when Midwestern State rallied for a 4-3 win Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The LSC North Division leading Savage Storm is 14-2 in North Division games with their only other division loss coming against Cameron by a score of 6-1 on March 10 in Durant.
Southeastern is led by All-America pitcher Marjorie Johnson. The senior, who was a second-team All-Big XII performer at Oklahoma State as a freshman, is 20-2 and is fifth in NCAA Division II with a 0.78 ERA.
Johnson has allowed 17 earned runs on just 25 hits in 151 2/3 innings, but only four of those have been for extra bases including two doubles (one by MSU's freshman
Mallory Mooney), one triple and one homer.
Johnson's 303 strikeouts averages out to 14 punchouts per seven innings which is tops in all of NCAA Division II.
But Johnson contributes outside of the circle as well. She rates fifth in NCAA Division II with 14 homers.
Senior shortstop Bailey Mathes leads the team with a .437 average with 13 doubles, 14 home runs and 58 RBIs while senior first baseman Benita Sanchez is hitting .419 with 15 doubles and seven homers including two against
Katie Petersen in Game 1 Wednesday in Wichita Falls.
Junior outfielder Erika Bernal is hitting .342 with 13 homers and 41 RBIs.
About the series
Midwestern State and Southeastern Oklahoma will meet for the 30th and 31st times Saturday afternoon at the SOSU Softball Field.
MSU holds a 15-14 advantage in the series with the Savage Storm claimed wins in each of the five meeting between the clubs last season including a 3-2 win in the NCAA Division II South Central Regionals on May 8, 2008 in San Angelo.
The teams split a twin bill earlier this week in Wichita Falls.
