Petersen dominates after rough start, MSU takes Game 2, 8-2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Nancy Sawyers and Brianna Fowlkes crushed home runs in the first inning to give Abilene Christian the early lead on Midwestern State ace Katie Petersen.

But Petersen settled down and didn't allow a hit over the next five innings allowing the Mustangs to rally for an 8-2 win over the Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Midwestern has now won six straight and 16 of its last 17 to improve to 17-5 on the season.

Maranda Bishop and Mallory Mooney each had four hits to pace the Mustangs' 13-hit attack.

Freshman Nicki Duff delivered a run scoring double to key a three-run first inning, while Lauren Craig jacked a two-run blast to center field to key a four-run inning as the Mustangs ran away with the win.

Despite the early home runs, Petersen yielded just a pair of earned runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks. The junior from Plano has now won nine-straight starts to improve to 9-3 on the season.

The Mustangs got to ACU starter Britney Benedict for seven runs - six earned - on 10 hits in three innings as she fell to 2-4 on the season.

Midwestern State plays host to Central Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park. The twin bill is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
