WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's freshman duo of
Nicki Duff and
Mallory Mooney proved too much for Southwestern Oklahoma State in Game 1 Friday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
Duff notched her team-best ninth-multiple hit game by going 3-for-3 while Mooney advanced her hitting streak to 13 with a two-run double in the fourth to help the Mustangs run-rule Southwestern 10-2 in five innings.
Katie Petersen allowed two unearned runs on four hits with six strikeouts and a wlk in four inning to claim a win in her eighth-straigh start to improve to 8-3.
Duff and Mooney drove in the Mustangs' first two runs before
Lauren Craig chased in another on an single to right field to give MSU a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Mooney then highlighted a four-run second inning with a two-run double over Bulldogs' center fielder Kristyn Shawver's head to push the Mustangs' advantage to 7-0.
Southwestern took advantage of an MSU error in the top of the third to plate two runs before the Mustangs put the game away with three more in the fourth keyed by RBIs by
Jessica Rodriguez, Craig and Petersen.
Craig and Petersen each added two hits as Midwestern slugged out 12 hits, while Mooney finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
Freshman
Kaelee Kramer pitched a perfect fifth inning with two strikeouts in relief of Petersen.
Southwestern leadoff hitter Laiken Lester accounted for two of the Bulldogs four hits.
The Mustangs improved to 14-5 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in the Lone Star Conference North Division while Southwestern fell to 8-11 and 3-4.
