Weary ignites Mustangs to 7-3 win over No. 25 West Texas A&M

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State erupted for five runs in the fifth inning to overtake No. 25 West Texas A&M 7-3 Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

Freshman shortstop Sarah Weary, who went 2-for-2 with a pair of stolen bases, served as the catylist as she led off with single up the middle, stole second then came around to score on Maranda Bishop's double to left.

Tabitha Yannetti kept the rally going with another single up the middle to plate Bishop and give MSU's its first lead off the contest at 4-3, but the Mustangs weren't finished as Lauren Craig belted a run-scoring single through the rights ide of the WT infield before Alyson Reynolds slapped a two-run single down the right-field line. to push the Mustangs' advantage to 7-3.

That was more than enough for Katie Petersen, who made her first appearance in the circle since March 10.

The senior Plano scattered nine hits while permitting three runs - two earned - with nine strikeouts to improve to 10-4 on the season.

The Lady Buffs seemed to be getting the better of the Mustangs early on as WT plated two runs in the first inning then answered MSU's first score in the bottom of the third with an Amber Farr RBI-single in the fourth to push the margin back to 3-1.

West Texas A&M starter Marci Womack retired the first eight hitters she faced before Weary found a hole in the right side of the Lady Buff's infield to give MSU its first baserunner of the contest. Bishop followed with the first of her two double of the game to cut the WT lead to 2-1.

Womack's second time through the Midwestern lineup proved disastrous as the freshman right hander allowed seven runs - all earned - on 11 hits in 4 2/3 inning to fall to 5-7.

The Mustangs cut the WT advantage to 3-2 when Reynolds delivered the first of her three RBIs of the game with a single up the middle to plate Mallory Mooney, who had also reached on a single.

Bishop extended her career-best hitting streak to 13-straight games with her double in the third inning and finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored, while junior second baseman Tabitha Yannetti was also 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Reynolds and Weary also had a pair of hits for MSU which finished with 11 hits as a team.
