Rodriguez, Craig blast 3-run bombs in Game 2, but MSU falls 8-7

EDMOND, Okla. - Jessica Rodriguez and Lauren Craig launched three-run home runs in Game 2 Saturday afternoon at Broncho Field.

But it wasn't enough to overtake Central Oklahoma as the Bronchos held off Midwestern State 8-7.

The Mustangs fell to 18-8 on the season and to 5-3 in the Lone Star Conference North Division, while the Bronchos improved to 12-8 and 7-3.

Midwestern jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Jessica Rodriguez yanked her sixth home run of the season on a three-run blast to left field.

The Bronchos jumped back quickly on MSU freshman Kaelee Kramer, who make an emergency start in place of ace Katie Petersen.

Central Oklahoma struck for a run in the second before the Mustangs pushed across a fourth run in the second inning as Alyson Reynolds sent a double to the left-field gap to lead off the inning then came around to score on Maranda Bishop's run scoring two-bagger to left field.

But the Bronchos plated four more runs in the third and three more in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead.

Craig cut the lead to a run in the seventh on her three-run blast to left-center field.

Kramer took the loss for MSU to fall to 1-1 after allowing five runs - all earned - on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Sophomore Brittney Tanner yielded three earned runs in two innings before Kelli Ward came on to pitch a scoreless 1 2/3 innings with a strikeout.

Brittany Zimmerman struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings to improve to 2-1 in relief of Molly Shivers, who allowed four runs - all earned - on four hits in two innings.
