WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Lindsey McLaughlin's three-run home capped a five-run sixth inning to lift Central Oklahoma to a 5-4 win over Midwestern State in Game 1 Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The Bronchos, who improved to 10-7 overall and 5-2 in the Lone Star Conference North Division, sent nine hitters to the plate in the decisive inning to score five runs on five to disrupt a solid start by Midwestern ace
Katie Petersen.
Alley Roberts delivered a two-run single to put UCO on the board before McLaughlin launched her first home run of the season over the right field fence to give the Bronchos a 5-4 lead.
It was Petersen's first loss in 10 starts as the righty from Plano allowed five runs - all earned - on six hits to fall 9-4. She had eight strikeouts and just two walks.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning after
Nicki Duff's single to left field drove in
Katie Petersen, who had reached on a single.
Midwestern extended the lead in the fourth after
Jessica Rodriguez connected for her sixth homer of the season to lead off the inning as the Mustangs would score three runs on four hits to give Petersen a 4-0 lead.
Brittany Zimmerman (1-1), who came on in the fourth inning for starter Molly Shivers, pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win in relief before Racheal Steverson came on to get the final two outs to pick up her first save of the season.
Duff, Petersen and
Alyson Reynolds each had two hits as the Mustangs accumulated 10 hits.
Roberts and Kelsey Tigers each went 2-for-3 to lead Central Oklahoma.
