SAN ANTONIO - Megan Bailey's two-out, two run single in the top of the sixth inning lifted No. 3 St. Edward's past Midwestern State 3-1 Friday afternoon at the St. Mary's NCAA Division II Classic at the SAISD Spring Sportsplex.
The loss was the third straight for the Mustangs, who fell to 1-3 on the season. MSU closes out the classic with a 1:30 p.m. showdown against Abilene Christian on Saturday afternoon.
Midwestern ace
Katie Petersen dropped to 0-2 despite delivering a solid performance as the junior right-hander allowed three runs - all earned - on nine hits in seven innings while striking out seven and walking three.
St. Edward's opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning when a Kelsey Cogdell sacrifice fly to center field plated Jamie Zilverberg to give the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead. Zilberberg had led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to third on Lexi Stephens' one-out double to left field.
The Mustangs retaliated in the bottom of the inning with
Amanda Potysman singling to left field to chase St. Edward's starter Diana Cezeaux, who allowed an unearned run on four hits while striking out one and walking two in four innings for a no decision.
Potysman took advantage of Hilltopper reliever Paige Sandahl's initial wildness to advance to second on a wild pitch, then to third when SEU first baseman Stacy Giles booted a
Maranda Bishop ground ball to give the Mustangs runners on the corners with no outs.
Sandahl settled in strike out
Nicki Duff before uncorking a wild pitch to allow Potysman to knot the game at 1-1. Sandahl escaped the inning by striking out
Tabitha Yannetti before inducing
Jessica Rodriguez to ground out to second.
St. Edward's got to Petersen for two runs in the sixth inning, while Sandahl allowed just two baserunners in the final two innings to earn the win in relief.
MSU sophomore right fielder
Alyson Reynolds paced the Mustangs' five-hit attack with a pair of hits.
The Hilltoppers improved 2-3 on the season.
