SAN ANTONIO - Midwestern State struck first against Incarnate Word Friday afternoon at the St. Mary's NCAA Division Classic, but Incarnate Word recoiled to take a 2-1 win at the SAISD Spring Sportsplex.
The Mustangs dropped to 1-2 on the season despite getting another stellar pitching effort from sophomore
Brittney Tanner.
Tanner went the distance, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out five and walking four, but fell to 1-1.
The Mustangs jumped on UIW starter Lea Padilla for a run in the first inning as
Maranda Bishop slapped a single through the right side and
Tabitha Yannetti slammed a single through the left side to lead off the game.
Midwestern took the aggression by executive a double steal before Bishop came around to score on an RBI groundout by
Jessica Rodriguez to go up 1-0.
But that's all Padilla would allow.
The freshman right hander from Bel Aire High School in El Paso went the distance while allowing just the single run on five hits. Padilla struck out six and walked two.
The Cardinals, who evened their mark at 2-2, got to Tanner in the third inning.
Serena Smitham drew a walk before scoring on Alex Carraman's doubled to the right-field gap to knot the game at 1-1. Carraman scored the go-ahead run after MSU right fielder
Miranda Jarrell dropped Ashley Hinojosa's fly ball to right to give Incarnate Word a 2-1 advantage.
Yannetti paced Midwestern's five-hit attack by going 2-for-3, while Bishop, Rodriguez and
Lauren Craig contribute a hit apiece. The Mustangs had no extra-base hits.
