Flores leads Rattlers past Midwestern, 5-1

SAN ANTONIO - Arlynda Flores pitched seven strong innings and drove in four runs at the plate to single-handedly carry St. Mary's to a 5-1 win over Midwestern State Thursday afternoon in the St. Mary's NCAA Division II Classic at the SAISD Spring Sportsplex.

The Rattlers (2-0) jumped on MSU ace Katie Petersen with two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Sade Moore and Kelly Baker draped a pair of doubles around a Lia Provence strikeout to give St. Mary's a 1-0 lead three batters into the game. The Rattlers added the second run on Flores' first RBI of the game - a sacrifice fly to center field.

Flores struck with a run scoring double in the third inning before thumping a two-run homer to left in the fifth inning.

Petersen, the Lone Star Conference North Division Preseason Pitcher of the Year, allowed five runs - three earned - on six hits while striking out four and walking three in six innings of work.

The Mustangs were unable to string together hits on Flores, who scattered seven hits while walking two and striking out two in the complete-game win.

Midwestern scratched for an unearned run in the sixth inning when Miranda Jarrell scored when St. Mary's center fielder Lauren Miller dropped Lauren Craig's fly ball to center field.

MSU freshman right fielder Nicki Duff continued a great start to her collegiate career as she delivered her second-straight mulitple-hit game in as many outings. The Plano native accounted for two of the Mustangs' seven hits.

Junior second baseman Tabitha Yannetti also went 2-for-3 with a double.

Midwestern (1-1) continues its play at St. Mary's Classic with a pair of games on Friday afternoon. The Mustangs take on Incarnate Word at 1:30 p.m. before battling No. 3 St. Edward's at 6.
