SAN ANTONIO - Jessica Rodriguez and
Brittney Tanner delivered two-run singles to key a five-run fourth inning to lift Midwestern State to a 5-3 win over Washburn Thursday afternoon at the St. Mary's NCAA Division II Classic at the SAISD Spring Sportsplex.
Tanner also delivered a complete game win in the circle where she yielder three earned runs on three hits while striking out eight and walking four.
Washburn jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Dani White luanched a one-out changeup down the the left-field line for a three-run home run to plate Lindsey Moore and Tish Williams, who had reached on walks.
Tanner settled in and allowed just one hit over her last four innings to start the season at 1-0.
The Mustangs took advantage of an error and a passed ball in the fourth inning to take control of the contest.
And it was freshmen that provied a spark.
Frosh
Nicki Duff led off the frame with a bunt single and rookie
Courtney Bingham drew a walk before another freshman,
Mallory Mooney loaded the bases with an infield single.
Senior
Jessica Rodriguez then delivered a two-run single to right field to plate Duff and Bingham while Mooney came around to score on a throwing by the catcher to knot the game at 3-3 as Rodriguez was caught in a rundown for the first of the inning.
The Mustangs continued to put pressure on Washburn starter Samantha Farris, who allowed five runs - two earned - on eight hits in six innings to fall to 0-1.
Farris worked into more trouble as she hit
Lauren Craig with a pitch and
Amanda Potysman reached on a passed ball before Tanner laced a two-run single through the right side to give the Mustangs a 5-3 lead.
Duff paced MSU at the plate by going 2-for-4.
