Mustangs erupt for sixth-straight win, eclipse Golden Suns, 10-3

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Mallory Mooney's bases loaded, bases clearing double in the third inning ignited a 10-hit explosion as Midwestern State rolled to a 10-3 win in the opener of the MSU Invitational Thursday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs, who have now won six-straight to improve to 6-4, made a winner of Katie Petersen, who struck out 12 for the complete game decision. The reigning Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Pitcher of the Week allowed three runs on five hits and walked four.

Arkansas Tech jumped on Petersen for three runs in the third inning keyed by Krista Cifuentes' two-run double as the Golden Suns worked long counts and even forced Petersen into a bases loaded walk to take a 3-1 lead.

But it was short lived as Midwestern rallied in the bottom of the frame.

Senior center Maranda Bishop, who scored after lacing an double to the left-field gap in the first inning, smoked a double off of the center fence to get things going for the Mustangs.

Tabitha Yannetti, who had doubled Bishop in to score in the first, laced her second run scoring hit of the day with a single to right field to plate Bishop for a second time to pull Midwestern to within 3-2.

Arkansas Tech starter Casey Hammons, who dropped to 2-1 on the season while allowing nine runs - five earned - on nine hits in five innings of work, issued consecutive walks to Jessica Rodriguez and Alyson Reynolds before Mooney sent a screamer to center to clear the bases.

The Mustangs took advantage of three Golden Suns errors in the fifth inning to plate four unearned before Rodriguez crushed her fourth home run of the season to cap the scoring in the sixth.

Bishop paced the Mustangs' 10-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and scored three runs, while Yannetti went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.

Roxie Palacios went 2-for-3 to lead the Arkansas Tech attack.

Midwestern State plays a pair of games Friday afternoon in the MSU Invitational at Mustangs Park.

The Mustangs take on Texas Woman's University at 1 p.m. before battling West Texas A&M at 3.
