WICHITA FALLS, Texas - West Texas A&M hasn't left many doors open early in the 2009 campaign.
But Midwestern State took advantage of the Lady Buffs' lone error Friday night and that was more than enough for ace
Katie Petersen as the Mustangs rolled to a 4-1 win Friday afternoon in the MSU Invitational at Mustangs Park.
WT second baseman Breanna Adams bobbled a ground ball which allowed Midwestern freshman speedster
Nicki Duff to reach with one-out in the first, then the Mustangs made Lady Buff starter Marci Womack pay dearly for the mistake.
MSU senior
Jessica Rodriguez roped an run-scoring single to left field after
Tabitha Yannetti drew a walk.
Alyson Reynolds then laced another single to left field to plate Yannetti to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
Rodriguez would come around to score when
Lauren Craig reached on a fielder's choice to push the advantage to 3-0.
That was all the support Petersen would need.
Petersen flashed dominating stuff while limiting the streaking Lady Buffs to a run on just three hits to improve to 4-3 on the season. The junior from Plano fanned 10 and issued three walks.
WT's Meghan Brown doubled in the Lady Buffs lone run in the fourth inning, but the Mustangs tacked on another run on Womack's bases loaded walk in the bottom of the inning.
Womack took the loss to fall to 1-1 and yielded two runs on five this with two walks and two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work. Lindsey Wright came on to pitch 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief.
The Mustangs, who have now won seven-straight games to improve 8-4 on the season, conclude the MSU Invitational with a pair of gams on Saturday at Mustangs Park. MSU battles Southwest Baptist at 11 a.m. before closing with Lincoln University at 3 p.m.
