Midwestern pounds Gorillas, 13-0, in 5

DENTON, Texas - Midwestern State continued on its hitter tear in the finale of the Texas Woman's Invitational Saturday night as the Mustangs rolled to a 13-0 win over Pittsburg State in five innings at Pioneer Field.

The Mustangs appeared to be going down in order in the top of the second inning as Pittsburg State starter Erin DeStefano retired Lauren Craig and Alyson Reynolds on consecutive groundouts to second base to start the inning.

But that would be the last out DeStefano would record as Midwestern strung together seven-straight hits and scored seven runs Craig grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.

Mallory Mooney ignited the onslaught with a single through the left side before Britney Tanner single through the middle. Amanda Potysman followed by rapping a single through the left side to plate Mooney.

Maranda Bishop and Nicki Duff followed with run-scoring singles before Tabitha Yannetti delivered a two-run double and Jessica Rodriguez slammed her third homer of the season - a two-run shot to left field - to cap the inning.

The Mustangs would add run in the fourth and put up a five-spot in the fifth to earn the run-rule victory and improve to 5-4 on the season.

Tanner, who went 2-for-4 and scored two runs at the plate, took advantage of the scoring outburst to notch her third win of the season in the circle. The sophomore from Burkburnett allowed just a double by Pittsburg State's Haley Deaton in the fourth inning as she yielded no runs on a hit while striking out six and walking two.

Duff and Mooney joined Tanner with two hits apiece as the Mustangs slugged out 13 hits for the second-straight game.

Midwestern State plays host to the MSU Invitational beginning next Thursday at Mustangs Park and Sunrise Optimist Complex. The Mustangs open the tournament against Arkansas Tech at 3 p.m.
