DENTON, Texas - Two-time All-South Central Region performer
Katie Petersen returned to form Saturday afternoon to lead Midwestern State to a 7-1 win over No. 3 St. Edward's at the Texas Woman's Invitational.
The Hilltoppers, who fell to 4-6, took advantage of a pair of MSU errors in the first inning that allowed Lisa Paul to drive in Jamie Zilverberg on a single to left to give St. Edward's a short-lived 1-0 lead.
But then Petersen settled in to allow just two more runners over the final six innings as Lexi Stephens reached on a single in the fifth inning and Paul on an error in the sixth.
Petersen won her second-straight decision to improve to 2-3 while allowing just the unearned run on two hits while striking out five and walking one in the complete game win.
The Mustangs (4-4) snapped back to tie the game on
Alyson Reynolds' RBI double to the right field gap in the second inning before scoring three runs on four hits in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
Midwestern tacked on three more runs in the seventh keyed by
Lauren Craig's two-run double to right field.
Four different MSU hitters accounted for multiple-hit games as the Mustangs recorded a season-high 12 hits.
Junior second baseman
Tabitha Yannetti led the way by going 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs, while freshmen
Nicki Duff and
Mallory Mooney joined Reynolds with two hits each.
Craig drove in three runs for Midwestern.
