ADA, Okla. - Savannah Carver just couldn't do all by herself Monday night at the Kerr Activities Center.
The sophomore guard from Amarillo scored 15 of her career-high 21 points in the second half, but it was enough to overcome a hotshooting Casi Rawls as East Central came away with a 71-58 Lone Star Conference crossover victory.
The loss was the third-straight for the Mustangs who fell to 2-6 on the season. MSU returns to Ligon Coliseum for a pair of crossover contests against Cameron and Southwestern Oklahoma next Saturday and Monday, respectively.
Midwestern erupted for a 23-5 first-half run fueled by senior guard
Andrea Buben, who splashed each of her season-high 10 points in the opening half, as the Mustangs turned an 11-6 deficit into a 29-16 lead when Buben canned a 3-poiner for from the left wing with 8:37 to go in the opening half.
East Central countered with a 9-0 run of their own before junior forward
Nolisha Markham connected on a pair of free throws with 1.7 seconds left in the first half to give MSU a 35-32 lead at the intermission.
The Mustangs pushed the lead back to nine points when Carver hit her second triple of the night to give MSU a 44-35 lead with 16:34 to go. Outside of a Markham finish in the paint off of a nice feed from Carver with 12:45 to go, Carver provided all of the scoring for the final 16-plus minutes of the game.
That's when Rawls took over as the senior guard scored each of her 14 points after the break while adding eight assists and seven rebounds.
Rawls kickstarted a 12-0 run with seven-straight points as ECU took hold of the lead and pushed it to 59-51 when Jourdan Clark, who led all scorers with 16 points, converted a fast-break layup with 4:40 to go.
Carver answered with her third 3-pointer fo the game to chop the lead back to five, but that's as close as the Mustangs would get the rest of the way.
Markham led the Mustangs' rebounding effort with eight points and nine rebounds, while
Jazman Patterson ahd four points and five rebounds in 23 minutes off of the bench.
East Central improved to 6-3 on the season.
