WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Midwestern State failed to cash in on four match points Thursday night as the Mustangs fell to Southwestern Oklahoma State 25-14, 14-25, 15-25, 25-22, 20-18 at Rankin Williams Fieldhouse.
MSU, which fell to 10-23 on the season and to 6-6 in the Lone Star Conference, can still clinch a berth in next week's LSC Volleyball Championships in Canyon with a win over Central Oklahoma Saturday night at Hamilton Field in Edmond. First service is set for 7 p.m.
The Mustangs rolled out to a 7-2 fifth-set lead, but allowed SWOSU to rally and tie the match at 11-11.
Midwestern fought off a match point when sophomore
Miranda Byrd got up for a solo block of the Bulldogs' Emily Walter to knot the match at 14-14.
The Mustangs were able to earn match points of their own at 15-14, 16-15, 17-16 and 18-17, but were unable to close out the match as SWOSU got kills from Tara Gibby and Jenny Naramore sandwiched around a pair of MSU service errors to tie the set at 18-all.
Consecutive attack errors allowed the Bulldogs to come away with the victory.
Byrd paced the MSU offensive with 15 kills and added nine digs and four blocks, while senior middle blocker
Sesley Graves added 13 kills to go along with three total blocks.
Sophomore libero
Kiara Jordan paced back-row efforts with 23 digs, while junior middle blocker
Lauren Bayer had six blocks to lead the Mustangs at the net.
Walter and Naramore paced SWOSU with 15 kills each, while Kayla Bader had 15 digs to lead the defensive effort.
The Bulldogs improved to 6-27 and 3-9.
