No. 20 Midwestern blows past St. Edward’s, 4-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - St. Edward's Scott Strickland took care of No. 20 Midwestern State's school-record shutout streak in the 8th minute Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

But it was all Mustangs over the final 72 minutes as MSU rolled past the Hilltoppers 4-1 to extend its unbeaten run at home to 18 matches.

"The most important thing today is we were down 1-0 and responded," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "After an emotional and hard-fought game on Friday, it was good to respond."

SEU forward Josh Nannen appeared to touch the ball down to his feet when making a move down the right wing before drawing Midwestern goalkeeper Raul Herrera to the top of the box before serving a cross to Strickland for the shot into the open net.

The goal snapped a school-record streak of seven-straight shutouts as the Mustangs had not let in a goal in more than 747 minutes of clock time, and it allowed the Hilltoppers to load the defensive third.

But MSU sophomore forward Craig Sutherland appeared to get in on a through ball in the 25th minute and was taken down in the center of the box before Paulo Teixeira converted the resulting penalty for the equalizer.

"They wanted to get to halftime up 1-0, but that PK really changed momentum for us," Elder said.

The momentum continued to swing in the Mustangs' favor as Sutherland played a Ryan Spence serve to create a one-on-one, breakaway opportunity for senior forward Bryan Sajjadi in the 36th minute.

Sajjadi beat SEU keeper Matt Moore on a low shot to the far post to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.

Teixeira added a second goal on another penalty kick in the 59th minute and sophomore Jack Robertson finished his own ricochet off of the post for the final tally in the 80th minute.

Midwestern State ran its current unbeaten streak to nine matches to improve to 7-1-2 after suffering a season-opening loss at Incarnate Word.

The Mustangs face Northeastern State Friday afternoon in Tahlequah. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.

St. Edward's dropped to 0-5-2.
