TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Six inches of overnight rainfall made conditions unplayable at the Northeastern State Soccer Complex.
That didn't make difference to No. 19 Midwestern State as it rolled to a 2-0 victory Friday night on the field turf of Doc Wadley Stadium.
"We adjusted well and played to our potential," MSU coach
Doug Elder said. "There weren't many opportunities because the field was so narrow."
The teams used the football lines which forced a constant battle in the middle for each of the 90 minutes of play, but the Mustangs were able to capitalize on its opportunities.
Junior midfielder
Landon Fruge' collected a cleared corner kick in the 38th minute and lasered a shot off of a defender's head to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead at intermission.
Sophomore striker
Craig Sutherland, who was playing just his second match since returning from a high ankle sprain, broke free on the left wing to serve a volley to an oncoming
Nick Auditore who deposited it for his seventh goal of the season.
"The defense played really well," Elder said. "It was a really big win on the road as we try to stay in control of our own playoff destiny."
MSU (9-1-2, 2-0-1), which limited the RiverHawks to two shots, is now unbeaten in its last 11 matches after suffering a 1-0 setback to Incarnate Word in its season opener.
The Mustangs will enjoy a week before playing host to St. Mary's (Texas) on Sunday, Oct. 18 at the MSU Soccer Field.
Northeastern State slipped to 6-4 and 0-1.
