Early goals haunt Mustangs, Central Oklahoma wins 2-0

EDMOND, Okla. - Central Oklahoma took advantage of a couple of fortuitous deflections to come away with a 2-0 Lone Star Conference win over Midwestern State Sunday afternoon at Wantland Stadium.

The win pushed the Bronchos to 12-5-1 on the season and 6-2 in the LSC, while the Mustangs suffered their third loss in five matches to fall to 11-3-2 and 5-3 in conference.

"UCO played a good, physical game," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We had some good look, but just hit it right to the keeper. We are generating some really good chances, but just aren't finishing them right now."

The Bronchos made Midwestern pay on mishit clearing attempts with the first coming in the fourth minute when UCO's Alli Miller served a cross in the box which deflected off of an MSU defender awkwardly to a wide open Katelyn Cropp, who deposited her seventh goal of the season to give Central Oklahoma an early 1-0 lead.

"It was very unlikely," Trimble said. "The ball just deflected to one of their players that was free in the box."

The Bronchos struck again after MSU senior center back Kat Bernick appeared to make a nice play on a run, but her clearing hit off of the back of another Mustangs defender directly to UCO sophomore forward Beth Helm who found the open net to push the advantage to 2-0 in the 32nd minute.

Central Oklahoma, who scored on two of their first three shots, opted to pack it in the on defensive end which allowed the Mustangs to outshoot the Bronchos 9-7 as MSU placed four shots on goal all of which were saved by UCO goalkeeper Megan Riley who notched her eighth shutout of the season.

MSU freshman Mallory Whitworth suffered her first collegiate loss between the posts.

The Mustangs close the regular season with a pair matches at the MSU Soccer Field next weekend.

Midwestern plays host to Abilene Christian Friday afternoon at 5:30 before closing against Angelo State Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
